Scholarship + Bursaries

A growing number of scholarships, bursaries and grants are available to students. Some are funded by government, some by James Cook University and some by private donors. Some are available to all students, while others target specific groups. Selection criteria will usually include academic performance, motivation and a commitment to school, university or community life. Some scholarships are also available to students suffering educational disadvantage. We encourage you to explore the variety of scholarships available and apply for any that may be appropriate to your circumstances. Some are listed here:

  • High Achievement Bursary Award
To encourage excellence, international students at JCUB who achieve a "High Distinction" result at JCU  receive a $A1000 "HD" fee reduction bursary.  Domestic students receive a $A250 award for their high achievement. (See notes below*)

  • Hugh Alexander Grierson Trust Scholarship
Open to Aboriginal students who are studying full time, for the duration of their course.

        *Notes:
The HD bursary is available only at JCU Brisbane, not at any other JCU campuses nor (to our knowledge) at any other Australian universities. It is also only available to students who have enrolled for a full degree program.

The $A1,000 is credited against subsequent subjects at JCUB.  If a "High Distinction" result is achieved in final trimester subjects, the bursary is a cash refund.

Currently, there is no limit to the number of HD bursaries awarded each trimester. Should we, in the future, limit the number of HD bursaries awarded each trimester, then the available HD bursaries will be awarded on Academic merit.

Students cannot receive HD bursaries:
  • If they fail to make full payment for all enrolled subjects by the appointed Census date for that trimester.  Census date is usually five weeks after the commencement of lectures.
  • For subjects for which they are on fee waiver bursaries or scholarships or exchange programs or cross institutional studies.
  • For any subject being repeated at JCUB
  • For all subjects if the student is found guilty of "Academic Conduct" in any subject eg. cheating, plagarism.

  • JCU Alumni Scholarships
Open to students with a parent who is a graduate of JCU and who are enrolled in a degree program at James Cook University. Value of the scholarship is generally $5,000, depending on available funds.

  • Australian South Sea Islander Community Foundation Scholarship
Open to Australian-born descendants of South Sea Islanders. Valued at $5,000 a year.
