Diversity and Inclusion in the Workplace

On Wednesday the 26th of April 2017, students studying LB5205 People in Organisations had a guest lecture from Red Hat’s Platform Support Manager, John Allen.

Mr Allen spoke to students about the importance of diversity in the workplace. He went on to demonstrate with examples from Red Hat’s current diversity strategy, how diversity should be addressed at a strategic level and how diversity in the workplace, when done correctly, directly contributes to an organisations bottom line.

In 2016, Red Hat’s Executive Vice President-Strategy and Marketing, Jackie Yeaney, discussed the company’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. “Data and evidence illustrates that the best ideas come from having lots of people looking at the same problem from different lenses. Being agile in technology and solving problems quickly is of the utmost importance, that’s why Red Hat values having a more diverse workforce, especially in IT”, Ms Yeaney.

Students will be assessed on John Allen’s presentation, and that of guest lecturer, Jason Thomas, in a “round table” assessment. Students are required to use these guest lectures as a platform from which to develop a deeper understanding of the topics presented.
